The Functional Movement Screen is a ranking and grading system that evaluates movement patterns and identifies functional weakness, asymmetries, imbalance and limitations.
The FMS consists of seven fundamental movements that require a balance of mobility and stability. These tests place you in extreme positions where weaknesses and imbalances become noticeable. It may surprise you that many people, even those who perform at very high levels, are unable to perform these simple movements. In fact we often use compensatory movement patterns instead of efficient movements, which can lead to poor biomechanics and injury.
The FMS generates a Screen Score, which is used to target problems and track progress. This scoring system then indicates the most effective corrective exercises to restore effective movement patterns.
This test is ideal for athletes, as by identifying weaknesses, we also know where we need to improve. We can monitor your FMS score to track your progress and identify corrective strategies that will be most effective to build up your strength.
Not only can the FMS strengthen areas of weakness, but it also flags up those who are at risk of injury. By highlighting the areas in which you could sustain an injury the FMS helps to decrease the risk and keep you performing at your best.
