Wellness is a term to describe the balance between a healthy mind, body and spirit. They three are intrinsically linked. Maintaining a healthy body will help you to achieve good health in both your mind and spirit, and develop an overall feeling of wellbeing. It is this sense of wellness that will enable you to live life to the full.

What is the Wellness Health Screening?

Weight management is a key factor in determining your overall wellness. The Wellness Health Screen is a tool to identify your risk factors for chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.

By identifying these risks at an early stage we give you the chance to address your lifestyle and make the changes necessary in order to reduce your risk of illness in the future. Early detection through regular Wellness Health Screening is your key to a healthier life and enriched wellbeing.

The Screening

Each Wellness Health Screen is tailored to meet your specific needs. Results, personal health concerns, advice and recommendations are discussed after your screening to give you a clear understanding of your health status.

The Screening includes the following elements:

Body Composition
Body composition describes the different body compartments (especially lean mass and fat mass) that make up a person’s body weight.

There are two categories of body fat. Essential fat is needed for proper body functioning. You need this fat for a healthy nervous system, brain, heart, lungs liver and other important organs. Generally men need at least 3-5% of their total weight to consist of fat, while women need around 12%.
Non-essential fat is found in fat cells and is often located just below the skin and around major organs. It helps cushion the body and keeps it warm.

Your lifestyle can have a huge impact on controlling the risk of excessive non-essential fat. To understand whether your exercise and nutrition programs are working properly, you need to know your body composition.
   
Body Fat Percentage
Ideal body weight is determined by the ratio between your ‘fat weight’ and ‘lean body weight’.
By testing your body fat percentage we will make sure you lie within the ideal ratios: 10-19% for men and 18-26% for women. If you’re not at your ideal ratio we will suggest tips for increasing lean body weight through weight training, or dietary adjustments.

Body Mass Index
Your BMI is a fantastic indicator of whether you’re a healthy weight. The theory is that your body weight should be proportional to your height, and it’s based on a simple calculation: dividing your body weight (in Kilograms) by your height (in meters squared).

Waist Circumference and Waist/Hip Ratio
How and where you store your fat can make a huge difference to your wellbeing. Excess fat in the abdomen puts you at a higher risk for disease. Excess abdominal fat is known to increase the risk for metabolic syndrome, which is a pre-diabetic condition and can lead to serious health problems.
It’s vital to flag up these issues at the earliest possible chance to reduce your risk of obesity and the relating health conditions.
An increased risk for disease is seen in men with a waist circumference greater than 102 cm (40 inches) and women with a waist circumference greater than 89 cm (35 in). A waist/hip ratio above 0.80 for women and 0.95 for men puts you at greater risk.
